Thistles

Much of my artwork is concerned with evolution and transformation. This series of paintings, although abstract, has its origin in nature. I was watching the overhanging branches in my back yard and noticed the development of lively, delicate offshoots flying from above. They were thistles: Puffy, featherlike and weightless.

During the process of this series, I evolved from the observance of nature to the revelation that these branches and thistles could take forms resembling human gestures. From docility to outrage the interaction of these forms could closely resemble human interaction.

These abstract paintings range from a soft yellow to copper and bronze. Coincidently, they assume an earthy appearance, particularly close to the autumn colors that cover our trees and ground, with fall foliage flourishing brilliantly in the New England area of the United States.

Whatever the basic inspiration for these pieces, they are abstract works. And if one does not sense the origin, that is acceptable, because they should be recognized as abstract.

Each piece in this series varies. They speak to me and remind me of my relationships and their accompanying variety of emotions and interactions. To transform the emotional quality of human relationships, while treating them as objective means to abstraction, is my challenge with these works.
